HBO gives people a chance to re-vote -- and maybe even create a hanging chad

The HBO film Recount premieres this Sunday night (May 25). The film is a fictionalized account of the 2000 presidential election in Florida — famous for the hanging chad.

To promote the film, HBO set up the infamous Votomatic machines at The Grove in Los Angeles on Tuesday to give people a chance to vote using a butterfly ballot. The folks at the vlog Why Tuesday? were there to capture the experiences of the “voters.” You can check out their video here.

Some “voters” had no problems; others were very confused. The lessons here: ballot design and device-interface really matter, and testing across a diverse population is a critical step when developing any new voting systems and devices — digital or otherwise.
